Bubble Formation in Zr Alloys under Heavy Ion Implantation
نویسنده
چکیده
We report here the results of a study conducted to examine the effect of Kr ion irradiation on bubble formation in Zr alloys. We used the H?EM/Tandem facility at Argonne National Laboratory to irradiate several Zr alloys, including Zircaloy-2 and k d o y 4 , at temperatures from 300 to 800 C and to doses up to 2 x 10'6ion.cm-2. Both in-situ irradiation of thin foils as well as irradiation of bulk samples with an ion implanter were used in this study. For the thin foil irradiations, a distribution of small bubbles in the range of 30-100 8, was found, at all temperatures with the exception of the Cr-rich Valloy where bubbles of 130 A were found. The irradiation of bulk samples at high temperature (700-800 C) produced large faceted bubbles (up to 300 A) after irradiation to 2 x 1OI6 ion.cm-'. The results are examined in the context of existing models for bubble formation and growth in other metals.

Compositional Dependent Amorphization in Zr Alloy Films by Means of Ni-Implantation
Ni-implantation has been conducted for sputter deposited Zr alloy films to investigate compositional dependent amorphization behavior in proportion to Ni in Zr alloys. As-deposited Zr and Zr–Cu with thickness of 200 nm shows columnar hcp-Zr and nano-crystalline hcp-Zr(Cu), respectively. Implantation of 150 keV Niþ with the amount of 1 10 ions/cm induces amorphization of Zr and Zr(Cu) with 100 n...
متن کاملEffects of zirconium and nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of Mg–Y–RE alloy in simulated body fluid and cell culture medium
The effects of dual Zr & N plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) on the corrosion behavior of WE43Mg alloy are evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF) and cell culture medium (cDMEM). Zr & N PIII improves the corrosion resistance of WE43 which exhibits smaller icorr, larger R1 & R2, smaller CPE2, and larger phase angle maxima in SBF and cDMEM. The Zr & N PIII WE43 samples exhibit 12-folds de...
متن کاملVickers microhardness measurement for AlCu alloy irradiated with swift heavy ions
Irradiation-induced hardening is an important phenomenon concerning the nuclear reactor safety, because it induces the embrittlement of reactor pressure vessel steels. This phenomenon, however, can also be applied for the modification of hardness of alloys. In the case of FeCu alloys, we have reported that GeV heavy-ion irradiation remarkably increases the hardness [1]. Volkov et al. have expla...
متن کاملHelium bubble formation in ultrafine and nanocrystalline tungsten under different extreme conditions
We have investigated the effects of helium ion irradiation energy and sample temperature on the performance of grain boundaries as helium sinks in ultrafine grained and nanocrystalline tungsten. Irradiations were performed at displacement and non-displacement energies and at temperatures above and below that required for vacancy migration. Microstructural investigations were performed using Tra...
